With the release date of Jyuuzaengi Engetsu Sangokuden 2 decided as 20th February 2014, here’s some more information on the sequel. Previously, the focus was on the three new characters. This post will mainly focus on the pre-existing characters, with a bit of information on the new sub-characters. Please note that this being a sequel, means spoilers for the first game.
Ryuu Bi (Liu Bei) CV: Ishida Akira
“Nee, are you lonely that I’m no longer the child that I always was……?”
The leader of the Maozoku who has regained his growth. The descendant of the Ryuu clan who was born with Kinme’s curse since birth. As a price for sealing the curse into his own body, his mind and body’s growth were robbed away from him. Due to that, his mind and body are much younger than his actual age. It’s only on nights with a crescent moon that the curse weakens and he can be the original Ryuu Bi. But ever since the Battle of Kanto, the original Ryuu Bi has started to surface more besides nights with a crescent moon.
Keyword: 渇仰 (adoration; admiration)
Director Itou’s comments: Ryuu Bi had inherited Kinme’s curse since birth, and was constantly robbed off his mind and body’s growth. He’d resigned himself to this destiny. But to such a him who’d given up on everything, the one thing he couldn’t give up after all was Kan U. His feelings for Kan U are close to that of a belief or faith, as he longs for her. In the previous game, towards the end Ryuu Bi became his original self.* For this game, he has regained his growth at the start of the game, and at the same time he’s affected by Kinme’s curse. Ryuu Bi who has lost hope and happiness, but still puts up a last resistance to confront destiny as well as himself, so as to gain the happiness (Kan U) whom he has never stopped wishing for since the past.
*TN: In the end of the previous game, Ryuu Bi only temporarily became his original self.
Artist Teita’s comments for child Ryuu Bi: As for Ryuu Bi, in a good way his image hasn’t changed. His pure white image remains the same, so I tried to make his appearance appear lighter, as well as cuter compared to before. The (main) point is the decorative (knotted) ribbon which has become bigger.
Artist Teita’s comments for adult Ryuu Bi: In the previous game he had dual personalities and so I gave him a darker impression. But this time I changed it as accordingly to the game content, to give a grander impression by adding in the white child Ryuu Bi wore. I think the atmosphere about him has grown slightly kinder now.
Chou Hi (Zhang Fei) CV: Okamoto Nobuhiko
“Well, Aneki has been bad at telling lies since before--”
The young Maozoku who admires Kan U. The young Maozoku who was raised together with Ryuu Bi and Kan U as siblings. He’s frank and impulsive, and acts before thinking. After the Battle of Kanto, they lived in the mountains of Kyoto (Xudou) with Ryuu Bi and company. He likes the older, strong and smart Kan U very much, and works hard so as to gain her recognition. But he’s also impatient by the fact that he’s always treated as a younger brother.
Keyword: 憧れ (longing; yearning)
Director Itou’s comments: Just like the previous game, he starts from the position of “brother” to Kan U at the beginning. But due to a certain incident at the start of the story, that becomes a trigger for his growth. In this game the Maozoku are placed in a very severe situation from the start, and so he inevitably matures in order to protect his comrades. To Chou Hi, Kan U is a definite figure of longing. But as the things he has to protect increase, it changes from only seeing Kan U to wanting to protect her whole world. Kan U and Chou Hi have been together since they were children, and so in a good way there’s no need for reservation. To the Kan U who tends to be overly considerate of others, there’s no need to do so with him, which means that he’s actually a very precious existence to her. In that way, one can say that he’s her “greatest support”.
Artist Teita’s comments: It’ll be quite a huge spoiler so I can’t say much. But concerning Chou Hi’s clothes it really reflects his growth, so I was conscious of making him look more adult-like. I think that he probably has a calmer atmosphere as compared to before.
Chou Un (Zhao Yun) CV: Suzumura Kenichi
“Be rest assured. Once the time calls for it, I’ll protect you.”
The general with the conviction to save the Maozoku. A general who isn’t tied down by the world’s common knowledge, and lives honestly to his own instincts and beliefs. His personality can be described as big-hearted, with the magnanimity to accept anything. He’s serious, grounded and reliable, but due to being overly generous he has naive side too. He served Yu Shuu’s Kouson San but with his passing away, he started to move together with the Maozoku.
Keyword: 復活 (revive; restore)
Director Itou’s comments: While he’s in a different camp now, Chou Un was considerate to the Maozoku from their first meeting. So with this taking place after the death of Kouson San, he’s now acting together with the Maozoku from the start. As a human, and as a reliable existence as a general, Chou Un will risk his own life to protect the Maozoku who are put in devastating situations. But in the midst of that misfortunate befalls Kan U and she’s severely hurt. Chou Un devotes and supports such a Kan U, and revives her spirit again. In the story, there’s yet another revival but this was actually a problem I personally took an interest in while writing the scenario for the previous game. Closing one’s eyes to this would mean deviating Chou Un’s personality, so I’m glad that I could recover it this time.
Artist Teita’s comments: Chou Un’s position has changed from the previous game, so I was conscious of that. Together with Chou Hi, both of them have the image of supporting Kan U and Ryuu Bi. So Chou Hi had black as a basis, and Chou Un had white as a basis, which I think gives off the feeling of a great pair (?). An image of a bodyguard with a good upbringing.
Sou Sou (Cao Cao) CV: Toriumi Kousuke
“I, want to gain everything. That’s the justice to me, that’s everything.”
The ruler who envisions conquering the continent. The ruler of Gi (Wei) who won over the Central Plains. In order to conquer the continent, he’s begun invading the Northern side. For his own ambition, he remains cool-headed and will resort to any tactics. He does not even open up to his subordinates who admire him. Due to certain reasons about his birth, he only carries hatred. But after learning about Kan U’s birth, he’s developed an attachment to her.
Keyword: 愛憎 (love and hate)
Director Itou’s comments: To Sou Sou, Kan U is “femme fatale”. She’s also the “destined lover” and the “woman who will ruin him”. In the previous game, they were both attracted to each other and after learning about Kan U’s birth, Sou Sou grew extremely attached to her. But in this game as he knows about her birth from the start, it’s a dangerous path in which attachment will later turn into love. Because of that, they will have to overcome that. The woman he loves is the only “destined lover” who exists in this world, and at the same time she’s the only existence in this world who can kill Sou Sou. The couple faced with the conflict of whether to love or to kill. Their relationship is exactly that of desiring and killing each other. Also, in other routes when Sou Sou knows of Kan U’s birth, he comes out pretty often so I find the captureable character(s) in the route(s) rather pitiful (laugh).
Artist Teita’s comments: Just like Kakou Ton, I tried to make him look more distinguished. I thought of making him look more gorgeous than before. I also wanted to pair him against Ryuu Bi.
Kakou Ton (Xiahou Dun) CV: Suzuki Tatsuhisa
“The bond between humans and Jyuuza!? As if that can be established!”
Sou Sou’s confidante who despises Jyuuza. He’s an elite general of Sou Sou’s army, who holds absolute loyalty to Sou Sou. Bounded by society’s common knowledge and fixed notions, of course he despises the Jyuuza who are hated by the world, as well as women. While he gradually recognises Kan U’s skills as a warrior through their fights, he is still biased towards the Jyuuza. He always moves together with his cousin Kakou En.
Keyword: 赦し (forgiveness)
Director Itou’s comments: In the previous game he despised the “Jyuuza” but as they were in the same camp, there wasn’t any enemy relationship between them. But in this game, they are in direct opposition and so they start off in a worse situation in terms of their relationship compared to the previous one. Moreover, being on different sides (invaders and invaded), they both hold feelings in a situation which cannot be compatible. Both sides have their own justice which can’t be given up, and they both fight while betting on that. That’s Kan U and Kakou Ton’s relationship. The two of them are “complete enemies”. In what way will they come to understand each other, approach each other, forgive each other – that will become the crux of the story.
Artist Teita’s comments: I drew him to look more distinguished as compared to the previous game. As for the fur (?) I added to each character’s clothes, there’s actually a meaning to them. But amidst them Kakou Ton is the prime of them all (laugh).
Chou Ryou (Zhang Liao) CV: Yusa Kouji
“Any form is fine. Please just allow me to stay by your side.”
The general of Sou Sou’s army who does not mind killing off people. He served Ryo Fu, the strongest general who likes slaughtering, and disappeared alongside her death. However, he was taken in by the Sou Sou army as he was wandering around Jo Shuu. He’s gentle-mannered and never stops smiling. He holds no hesitation in killing people, and can easily cut his enemies away no matter who they are while smiling. But he approaches Kan U with a single-minded desire.
Keyword: 犠牲 (sacrifice)
Director Itou’s comments: Ryo Fu was defeated by Ryuu Bi in the previous game. In this game the story starts with Chou Ryou appearing in Jo Shuu again, even though he should’ve disappeared alongside Ryo Fu. Just why is Chou Ryou still alive, and for what purpose. After meeting Chou Ryou again, Kan U’s body starts to undergo unusual changes. While solving these problems, the distance between Chou Ryou and Kan U will shorten. And when all the mysterious come to light, the crux of the route will be the following conflict and choices: what can I do for my loved ones, and what will I do. The Chou Ryou who doesn’t need anything other than Kan U, and the Kan U who was saved by Chou Ryou’s overly direct love. Originally it was a relationship which could never have been established. But now it’s a painful one where they sacrifice themselves for their loved ones, but at the same time at the cost of their loved ones.
Artist Teita’s comments: Chou Ryou is also a character whose position has changed in 2, so from the start I thought of changing the atmosphere around him at one go. Rather than say that his image is one of secrecy, it’s the feeling that Kakou Ton is the front and Chou Ryou is the back. I kept in mind of the differences between what his previous mistress Ryo Fu desired, versus his current master Sou Sou.
Ka Ku (Jia Xu) CV: Ichijou Kazuya
“Nice to meet you, Ojou-san. My name is Ka Ku. Sou Sou’s strategist.”
He originally served the enemy camp of Sou Sou’s, but later joined Sou Sou’s army as his talent was recognised. He can read what will happen in advance, and carry out precise proposals. He’s one of the few who can raise his opinion to Sou Sou.
Director Itou’s comments: Wanting a subordinate who could make suggestions and objections to Sou Sou, he was created. In the first place he was an enemy of Sou Sou’s army and was a person who changed masters several times, so he was created with a carefree image.
Artist Teita’s comments: The oji-san position in Sou Sou’s side. I tried to create a carefree atmosphere, and in which one can’t tell what he’s thinking. It’s a type you don’t really have in Jyuuzaengi, so I had fun designing him.
Kaku Ka (Guo Jia) CV: Suzuki Yuuto
“Ahahahaha! Impossible impossible. Kakou Ton-san’s head is filled with stones.”
A young and insightful strategist who serves Sou Sou, but he’s also a reckless problem child in his daily life. In terms of strategy, he’s a cool-headed and ruthless. He adopts Sou Sou’s conquest of the continent as his dream.
Director Itou’s comments: He was created as a strategist who can undertake coercive measures unlike Kakou Ton and Kakou En. Possessing an absolute thinking that strength = justice, he carries things out with complete control.
Artist Teita’s comments: This is also a type you don’t really have, so it was fun to think about (his design). Despite being the same age as Kakou En, I drew him with a completely different atmosphere. Thinking of these two, I was touched at the thought that “Sou Sou’s army has become lively” (laugh).
Ryuu Hyou (Liu Biao) CV: Iwasaki Masami
“Keishuu is also the home village of Maozoku. Please make yourselves at home.”
The viceroy of Keishuu. He excels in political strength, but is a timid person who is indecisive. He fears Sou Sou’s conquest of the North.
Ryuu Ki (Liu Qi) CV: Yamashita Seiichirou
“I’ve finally found you all. Nice to meet you, Maozoku.”
Ryuu Hyou’s eldest son. Different from his sly father, he has a pure and gentle personality. He respects the Maozoku.
Shou Kou (Shang Xiang) CV: Shintani Ryouko
“Go (Wu) should join hands with the Ryuu Bi army to defeat Sou Sou……”
Son Ken’s sister. After the passing of the father and eldest brother, she’s now Son Ken’s only blood relative. Her appearance is like that of her brother’s, like two peas in a pod.
Kou Gai (Huang Gai) CV: Ishii Kouji
“What exactly were you thinking by slipping out of the country on your own accord and wandering about!”
The Go (Wu) general who has served the Son family for three generations. As he’s been present since the building of the country, he holds very strong feelings for it.
