Hello, I'm still a newbie at using WordPress, so please bear with me if I make any mistakes. But in any case, like the title says, I'm going to be talking about otome gaming magazines! One of the things I usually see people ask is what's the difference between the various magazines or which one's better to buy, so I decided to make this post in a place that's easily accessible so that hopefully people would be better informed on which magazine they might want to invest in without having to search forever for that.
Dengeki Girl's Style
DGS used to be released bi-monthly but as of 2012, it's begun releasing monthly around the 10th of each month. In contrast to B's log magazine, it primarily covers otome-related news from games (console to mobile) and CD dramas, to novels and manga. They also have articles on some anime that are popular with girls. They rarely cover any BL ones, and even then there's not a lot, so if you don't squint you'll probably miss it. Recently, they also started serializing the manga of Otomate's Toki no Kizuna and Rejet's TinyxMachine gun. Personally, for an otome gamer who's just starting out or people who can't read any Japanese and had to only choose one of these magazine, I'd recommend getting DGS because awhile they might have less game announcements or extra stuff (like scrunchies/stickers/etc) than B's log, they have more substance on certain games (like Arcana Famiglia, Starry Sky, etc.) and they tend to have some nice new artwork that B's Log doesn't have as well as some information for events in Japan that are related to certain otome games.
B's Log is a monthly magazine released around the 20th of each month. It used to primarily cover BL/Yaoi games but after they started covering otome games, the articles for that started overshadowing the BL section, so it's... now kinda like 2.5/5 otome news, 1.5/5 BL news, and 1/5 visual novel/misc games news. It tends to cover more numbers of otome games than DGS (and for some series like Hana Awase, B's Log tends to get more coverage.) It also contains some news on female-oriented merchandise such as CD dramas, otome game/bl game artbooks, etc, as well as a popularity ranking and release calender. B's Log also tends to give out some nice little extras every once in awhile like mini calenders, bracelets, clear files, etc. So, if you like those things and want to know about as many new otome game news as possible, B's Log would be the magazine I recommend to you.
THIS ONE IS PRIMARILY A MATURE BL MAGAZINE, it's released bi-monthly and unlike both DGS and B's Log, this one does NOT censor R18 games' NSFW CG samples or artwork so view it at your own risk. The only reason this magazine is mentioned here is that there IS an otome game section in this magazine... it's just 1/3 of the book. However, Cool-B tends to come with a CD that contains wallpapers, demos, and OPs for the games featured in that particular issue, so the otome games featured in Cool-B also gets that. I wouldn't recommend buying this magazine unless you want a lot of BL news, are desperate for sometimes unique wallpaper artwork for otome games (like me) or just have extra cash to spare for it.
Cool-B Sweet Princess
Sweet Princess is like Cool-B in that it comes with a CD with wallpapers, demos, OPs for the games featured in the issue it comes out, but unlike Cool-B all of these games are otome games. The troublesome thing about Sweet Princess is that it's difficult to predict when it comes out - at least I thought it was one every three months and then last year it's like... half year per issue so, to borrow my friend's word, we'll just say it's 'seasonal.' Due to its sporadic nature, Sweet Princess doesn't tend to have any news that you won't have already seen in B's log or DGS, and besides that extra CD I mentioned earlier, it's other strong point is that it tends to have beautiful new artwork/spreads that aren't featured in either magazines. Unfortunately I don't have an issue close at hand right now to check if they directly feature NSFW/R18 stuff like in Cool-B, but to be safe, I'll say that it does for now.
Cool-B Bitter Princess
Bitter Princess is exactly like Sweet Princess, except that it features ONLY R18 otome games, and it's released once per year... it's just that we can't predict which month it'll drop in since the first issue was released in May of 2011 but then the second issue was released in September of 2012, so to kinda compensate for that, it gives out even rarer artwork for those R18 otome games featured in it. Suffice to say, this magazine is pretty NSFW so I wouldn't recommend getting this magazine unless you're a collector like me, or are specifically curious about R18 otome games.
As for where to buy them... You should probably be able to order them at your local Kinokuniya, or Japanese Bookstore or if you're willing to pay an arm and a leg for shipping, there's the option of buying from Amazon.co.jp or from CDJapan. Personally, I've never bought a magazine from CDJapan before, so I don't know how fast/reliable their shipping is, but Amazon tends to be pretty fast (it usually only takes them the day the book comes out or 1-2 days after that to ship)... they just tend to overcharge on shipping fees so if you're going to order a magazine from them, it's better to order other things along with it too to save your wallet (if only for a little) Aaaand that should be all. I hope this article was of help to anyone curious about these magazines or debating which to buy!
